My “communication” page explains how student achievement is measured, recorded, and reported to the individual and their interested parties. This year I am using a program called JumpRope which aligns formative and summative assessments with my learning targets. I can create an assignment, align it to the specific learning target(s) and easily enter the numerical value (1, 2, 3, or 4) the student has achieved. I can view learning targets by student, to see their personal growth on that target, or view the target by class so I can decide if my students have met the target and are ready to move forward.
In my Natural Resources class I also use the “21st Century Skills” to report on students’ habits of learning. As an upper house teacher I do not have the opportunity to report out specifically on these habits. However, at the end of each major unit I meet with each student to discuss their personal strengths or need for growth specific to the life and career skills outlined in the framework definitions.
JumpRope allows me to email students’ progress home every couple of weeks. Because my units vary in the amount of time we spend on them, I make sure to provide this communication at approximately the halfway point of each unit so that the student still has time to improve their skills if needed. I also keep handwritten notes on the habits of my students which I refer to if I need to further communicate with their families.
